SUGAR DADDY

Grace Poon drank the last of her Americano and put the cup back on its saucer with slow deliberation. Then she sat back. For a while, neither of them spoke. Schlakier waited.

‘There’s something else I haven’t told you Andrew,’ she began. ‘I wasn’t going to mention it but now that you’ve told me about what you saw on the CCTV footage, I feel compelled to. Amanda had another lover.’

Now it was Schlakier’s turn to be stunned.

‘You mean before her affair with the lab technician ended.’

‘Yes. I wasn’t going to mention it out of respect for Amanda but …’

‘And you know who it is?’

She nodded. ‘Like I said, Amanda and I were close. We talked about our relationships.’

A waiter came around to collect their coffee cups and wipe down the table. They waited in silence until he left.

‘Who was it?’ asked Schlakier.

‘Simon Leung. Stephen’s father.’

Schlakier shot her an incredulous look.

‘The student having the affair with the vice principal?’

‘Yes.’

‘My God. What a mess.’

‘I do feel the need to defend Amanda’s. She was a very outgoing person. Both in school and out of it. She had an active social life. An active sex life, I would say. But she never set out to hurt anyone. To deceive anyone.’

She coughed a little and put a hand to her throat. ‘Perhaps I’ll have that water after all.’

‘Of course.’ Schlakier went to the counter, purchased a bottle of Perrier and returned to the table. She unscrewed the cap and took a sip.

‘This other lover,’ continued Schlakier, ‘Simon Leung. He would have been a good deal older than Amanda.’

‘Yes. In his late forties, I’d say.’

‘What was he – some sort of sugar daddy.’

‘I suppose he was. He was one of the school’s biggest patrons. He gave generous donations. He helped fund the new library.’

‘By “biggest patron”, I assume you mean one of the wealthiest.’

‘Yes. I believe his father started a very successful watch business back in the eighties. I’m sure he reaped the benefits. But he absolutely doted on Amanda. He was always buying her gifts.’

‘Like what?’

‘Expensive jewellery, a Gucci handbag, exclusive restaurants. She said he was always the perfect gentleman.’

Schlakier scribbled something down in his notepad.

‘And what did Missus Leung think about all this?’

‘I doubt she knew.’

‘How did the two of them meet? Simon and Amanda.’

‘I’m not exactly sure. Possibly some sort of fundraiser. He’s quite active in the community.’

‘And did their affair end badly?’

‘I couldn’t possibly say. That’s one thing Amanda never mentioned.’

‘I see.’

She took another sip of her Perrier and glanced at her watch.

‘My God,’ she said. ‘I have been here almost forty minutes. I have to get back to school. There are parent-teacher interviews tonight.’

‘Of course. Thank you, Grace. What you’ve told me today has been helpful with my investigation. More than helpful. But if anything else occurs to you, don’t hesitate to call. You have my card.’

‘But needless to say, I want to remain an anonymous source. I don’t want any of this to get linked to me. I still have my job at the school to think of.
